The history of

house of jane

Magdalena and Lin purchased this house, without ever going inside in April 2020. This was the height of Covid, when no one was showing houses. We had been talking about purchasing our first home upstate for years, and being confined to our small Manhattan apartment during covid really put the plan into motion. During a weekend, we drove by 37 houses we saw listed on Zillow and House of Jane never even made that list (check our the Zillow listing photos below and you’ll see why).

As we were driving to The Arnold House, we passed this run down, overgrown, white house that we recognized from our online searches. We acknowledged that “oh that house is for sale” and kept on driving. We got to the top of the hill, and turned back around “just to look”. We pulled in the driveway, tiptoed up the very unsound back porch and peeked inside. It was, as expected, a shithole.

So we said, HELL YAH lets do it. This is our shit-hole now. We spent the summer listening to T.Swift on repeat while tearing up carpet, knocking down walls, and catching 3957130 mice. We laughed a lot. We occasionally cried. Magdalena did yard work in Business Casual (check out the instagram highlight here. You won’t regret it). Now, more than 2 years later, we are thrilled to be able to share this true labor of love with everyone.

THE ZILLOW LISTING

Who is jane?

Who is jane?

The idea of “Jane” was born in 2016 when Magdalena was attending a conference where there was this insane statistic, something around the lines of “There are more men presenting at the conference named John than there were female CEOs attending.” And that is where Jane was born. Jane, Jane Doe, the female version of John in our society. You don’t know her, but you know her.
